Maximizing a Sites Earning Potential

Part 1 | Follow along in my personal project.

February 4, 2009 by Gary Simon

I have a bunch of sites that I’ve built, established and forgotten over the years and this blog post is the first in a series that will showcase my attempt at taking one of them and getting it to making some decent passive income.

The site is HealthyGo Online Fitness Training.  I established the site back in May of 2004.  The idea is online fitness training via a monthly subscription, and while I had it up and running and accepting members, I ultimately ended up closing the join form and forgetting about the idea due to other circumstances.

I wrote over 60+ quick SEO oriented health / fitness related articles and I have adsense on only some of them.  The thing that caught my eye when I decided to check the adsense stats for it for the first time in a long time, was the $11.00 eCPM.  So every 1,000 impressions, I earn $11.00.  Problem is is the site doesn’t get much traffic. With the pages that I have adsense on, it only registered a bit over 500 impressions.  But looking at my awstats, the site gets about a total of 100 unique visitors a day.

So my goal is to take this site from earning a measily $6.80 in all of January ‘09, and making it a *lot more* within the coming months through adsense, automatically internal linking the article content for better SEO, establishing some more backlinks (though this won’t be a primary focus), and getting the membership system back up and running on a subscription model.

Expect an update on the progress within the next month!

Hey good tutorials and very nice of you to teach this stuff.

You could realy make some money with this type of site.
There is this one site called keventajat.fi over here, thats making big bucks with similar consept. but I think the reason it got so popular was because of TV adds.

Keep up the good work ! :)

This video gave me a good idea.. I’m a moderator at a forum and we have a donate page but it’s only paypal. Many of the members- including myself- say they want to donate but their parents won’t let them.

What if you had a link on your page that just took you to a page with adsense ads? If the users simply clicked on them, you would get money, correct?

I love the site and the video tutorials, Gary. Awesomely informative. I’m up to date on the Wordpress tut and for once I’m enjoying html (hah).

This tutorial might be of interest to me as well, but my site has a poor click-through rate (0.33%). Thanks for the tutorials, man.

@Andy

Yes, you make money when people click on your adsense ads. Problem is, you can’t ask members to go click on ads. If you do anything such as that, Google will punish you from what I understand (never tried it).

Great tutorials Gary! I can’t wait for you to finish the wordpress videos! :)
