Full CSS Backgrounds

Boring Backgrounds make for Boring People?

January 11, 2009 by Gary Simon

Everything about you is boring, your job, your life, your face, your personality, even your fucking website background for christ’s sake.  But fortunately for you, I’m going to help you eliminate another boring aspect of your life.  Full CSS backgrounds allow you to add more than just some lame repeating gradient or pattern, they let you create a truly unique background that doesn’t have to repeat.  I must warn you however, I fail majorly in this video, somewhere in the middle.

Keep up the good work, I’ve watched every tutorial and enjoyed them all. You do a great job of explaining everything. Also, keep cursing, I’m tired of P.C. tutorials.

Thanks, though I’m not swearing to swear, it’s all how I normally talk day to day - otherwise that’d be “douchebaggery” :)

i enjoyed the vid! however why did the repeating background not work the first time? maybe i’m missing something you said but yeah … wondering.

It’s because I had a moment of mental retardation.. Basically, the very top pixels were lining up exactly with the very bottom pixels (same with the sides), so when you take that image and repeat it, the tops/bottoms and sides were exactly the same, when they needed to be offset by 1 pixel in order to make it “flow”. :)

There is nothing worse than having to look at somebody else doing something.

Would have been great but I lost interest halfway through. Lot of statements of being more interesting in backgrounds but I didn’t really feel it was.

Tiling is 1000’s of years old and is tired and as mentioned really simple.

Like I say I was hoping for something more, like http://www.viget.com/inspire/

I would recommend csszengarden to anyone wishing to create interesting layouts.

Nice work.

Nice tut, what is the tool you used for the firefox addon? Also, can I change the backgrounds for pages like Facebook, MySpace, etc…?

Thanks

Eff, one more Question. How come when I replace the background image with another, as soon as I close the editor, it reverts back to the old image.

Avangelist: The link you posted, the same exactly concept / method / process applies.

Leejin: Because it’s just meant to be a temporary thing, not a permanent fix. It’s for testing purposes :)

…really fuckin’ enjoyed it! Thanks!

You couldn’t hear me but when you were having trouble with the pattern, I was yelling at the computer. I could see that you needed to chop 1 row of pixels off the bottom, and 1 column of pixels off the right, then it would have been the seamless pattern I think you were after. I thought your fucked up pattern looked cool anyway so, fuck it!

Thanks for the fuckin’ entertaining and informative tutorial.

Loved the tutorial, just like the previous ones. I am definately looking forward to new ones. Is trafic increasing yet? ;)

I couldn’t quite catch the 1 pixel thingy you did when cutting out the sides… could you please explain it some more?
